What NOT to Use as Lube
What Not to Use as Lube… Slippery Doesn’t Mean Safe.
At Vira, we’re all about helping you tune into your body, connect with pleasure, and feel empowered to make choices that support your wellness—especially when it comes to intimacy.
So let’s get real about something that’s often whispered about (or Googled in a panic at 1 a.m.): “can i use this as lube?????”
It’s tempting, we know. You’re in the moment. You want something now. You reach for what’s in arm’s reach. But just because something is slippery doesn’t mean it’s safe for your most sensitive areas.
Let’s break down the big no-no list of things that are not real lube, and why they can cause more harm than help.
Spoiler alert, tried and tested lubes are available to purchase at Vira. Explore the SUTIL brand here and here on our website.
❌ Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum jelly might be a staple for dry lips or chapped skin, but it’s a terrible idea for your vagina.
Why?
• It creates a thick, sticky barrier that traps bacteria
• It is not water-soluble, so it’s hard to wash away
• It can increase your risk of infections like bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections
• It can degrade latex condoms (aka—makes them more likely to break and not protect you during sex)
❌ Hand Lotion or Body Cream
Sure, it’s technically slippery. But lotion is formulated for external skin, not internal tissue.
Most contain:
• Fragrances (irritating!)
• Preservatives
• Alcohols
• pH-disrupting ingredients
These can cause itching, burning, and throw off your natural vaginal balance, which can lead to irritation and infections. Your hands and your vulva need very different formulas.
❌ Baby Oil, Suntan Oil, Peanut Oil, or Massage Oil
These oils may seem natural, but they’re not vagina-safe. They’re:
• Occlusive, meaning they trap heat and bacteria
• Not pH-balanced
• Often made with additives or fragrances
• Likely to degrade condoms
❌ Corn Oil or Sunflower Oil
Cooking oils are for your kitchen, not your vulva.
These oils:
• Can go rancid quickly
• Aren’t tested for safety on mucous membranes
• Can cause irritation or allergic reactions
Even if they’re labeled “organic” or “cold-pressed,” they are not sterile, and your vaginal tissue is too sensitive for guessing games.
❌ Whipping Cream
We get the romantic imagery, but dairy and genitals do not mix.
Whipping cream is a no because:
• Sugar feeds yeast
• Cream is thick, sticky, and hard to rinse out
• It creates a breeding ground for bacteria
• It can cause itching, burning, or a full-on infection
If you want dessert in the bedroom, try chocolate body paint that’s actually formulated for that sort of thing—or better yet, just keep the treats above the waist.
❌ Vaginal Yeast Medications or Estrogen Cream
These are medicines, not lubricants.
Using them when you don’t need them can:
• Alter your vaginal pH
• Kill off beneficial bacteria
• Mask underlying issues
• Cause unnecessary side effects
Only use these with the guidance of your healthcare provider—and definitely not as lube.
❌ Coconut Oil
This one’s tricky. Coconut oil is often marketed as a natural lubricant, and while it’s antimicrobial and moisturizing, it’s not for everyone.
• It’s oil-based, so it can break down latex condoms
• It can trap bacteria and cause irritation in some people
• It’s not pH-balanced for vaginal use
• It can disrupt the microbiome and lead to yeast flare-ups
If you’re prone to irritation or infections, skip it and stick to lubes like SUTIL Luxe designed specifically for vaginal or vulvar use. Explore the SUTIL brand here and here on our website.
What Is Real Lube, Then?
Real lube is:
• pH-balanced
• Free from glycerin, parabens, and fragrances
• Water-based (best for toys + condoms) or body-safe silicone-based
• Designed specifically for your vulva and vagina
• Bonus: some are even infused with soothing botanicals or hydrating hyaluronic acid
It’s not about being fancy—it’s about being safe, gentle, and supportive of your body’s natural rhythms.
Trust Your Body. Respect Its Needs.
Your body speaks to you—through sensation, reaction, and intuition. When it comes to lube, it’s worth choosing something that’s formulated with intention and made to care for you.
So next time you’re tempted to grab that jar of coconut oil or reach for lotion in a pinch—pause. Breathe. You deserve the real thing.
